31 Years of Gaming History End as EA Shuts Down BioWare

The studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age is being closed, with early work on the next entry in the sci-fi saga officially canceled.

Electronic Arts has officially terminated BioWare, the developer responsible for iconic franchises including Mass Effect and Dragon Age, ending a thirty-one-year run for the studio. The closure was confirmed via an internal letter to employees sent this week, which also announced that early development on the next Mass Effect title has been killed. This move marks the final chapter for the Edmonton-based studio, which had been part of EA since 2008.

The company stated that it made the decision not to move forward with the early-stage Mass Effect project, which was previously announced in late 2020. While the series is not declared dead, the small team working on the upcoming game will no longer continue its work. EA described BioWare as a “legendary studio” but indicated that resources will be redirected to other priorities. The last major release from the studio was Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, which EA noted engaged about 1.5 million players during its launch quarter, a figure significantly below internal expectations.

EA’s strategic focus is now shifting toward three core pillars: deepening its core franchises, expanding its reach, and transforming its business model. The company highlighted Battlefield 6 as a “great success” and is prioritizing development on Apex Legends modes and Marvel’s Iron Man. Additionally, the next Star Wars Jedi game is moving forward, while EA Sports is focusing on “Project Gridiron,” a social-first open-world American football experience, and a Fight Night revival currently in pre-production.

For affected staff, EA said they will be supported in exploring other opportunities within the company. No specific job numbers were disclosed in the letter. BioWare’s general manager, Gary McKay, had previously noted that only a “core team” was working on the next Mass Effect game and that the project did not require support from the full studio. The decision comes as EA goes private following its acquisition in August, signaling a tighter focus on profitability and core IP.

The industry context for this shutdown includes recent workforce reductions elsewhere, such as Microsoft’s announcement of 3,200 Xbox job cuts in July due to low margins. EA plans to discuss its future direction and upcoming projects with staff at a Global Town Hall event scheduled for November. For now, the company is doubling down on its most successful titles while discontinuing the studio that defined a generation of role-playing and sci-fi gaming.

This restructuring reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry where publishers are consolidating resources around proven franchises. While BioWare’s catalog remains active, the studio’s operational closure signals a significant shift in how EA manages its development pipeline. The next few months will be critical as the company navigates the transition and addresses questions from both employees and fans regarding the long-term status of beloved series.
